In Christ or Hitler, Christian Puritz relates the faith and fortitude of German pastor, Wilhelm Busch, through two world wars with heart-warming and challenging autobiographical anecdotes. This valuable collation of material is translated and presented highlighting the very deliberate choices between Christianity and The Third Reich made – at considerable cost, by the Lutheran pastor under the slogan, “Jesus our destiny”.

Born in Elberfeld in 1897, Wilhelm Busch was a son of pastor Dr. Wilhelm Busch and his mother, Johanna (née Kullen). After graduating he served with the German army as a young officer-lieutenant in World War I, coming to faith following the death of a comrade.

After the war he studied protestant theology in Tübingen going onto serve six months as vicar to the Lutheran Church of Gellershagen near Bielefeld, In 1924 he became a pastor in Essen with an evangelistic Christian ministry to local miners. In 1929 he became youth pastor in the Christian youth centre, later called Weigle-Haus while also preaching evangelising sermons all over Germany and abroad.
His uncompromising stance with the German Confessing Church against the influence of the Third Reich and his refusal to refrain from teaching the Bible earned him several arrests and lengthy prison sentences.

After World War II he renewed his activities as a youth pastor and evangelist with the slogan “Jesus our destiny”. Busch died in hospital in Lübeck in 1966. The funeral was attended by the later President of the Federal Republic of Germany Gustav Heinemann who gave the oration.
